New yr middle school(M8) Leesville Church Rd/Strickland Petition

* Target:  To WCPSS School Board Members, County Commissioners, and Staff
   * Sponsored by: North Raleigh Families  WHO Care

Please add your name to the petition below to show your support for M-8.  It is important that the board knows there is community support in NW Raleigh for this school, at this time where there are other proposed schools vying for limited funding.

Be Present. Be Informed. Be Heard!

M-8 is  a middle school site in the Leesville High School zone near the intersection of Strickland and Leesville Roads.  A school could be built and ready for new students by 2013 if preliminary work begins shortly.  Wake County already owns the land and because several school construction projects funded by the 2005 bond referendum came in under budget there is money available to begin the work now.

Moving up the construction of M8 would help alleviate crowding at Leesville Middle School as well as give families a year round calendar option in the newly proposed Northwest zone.  The proposed zone has 5 elementary schools feeding into just one middle school.  Applying to Durant Middle, in the neighboring zone, may be an option but it is also very overcrowded.

Several projects are under consideration but there is only enough money to build two schools with the currently available funds.

Last month, the board had voted 6-2,with Goldman and John Tedesco being the only members voting "no" on starting design work for the three new schools: an elementary schools in N. Raleigh(E20) and Apex( Scotts Ridge), and the middle school in northwest Raleigh( M8), indicating their desire for more schools in Southeast Raleigh and concern that these decisions were being made before the new community assignment zones were finalized. At Debra Goldmans request, this issue returned to the full BOE's agenda Tuesday, September 7Th.  Her motion to rescind the prior vote died when no one seconded her.

There is only enough money from bond savings right now to build two of the schools. The money for these sites comes from a BOE reserve of roughly $45 million. It was accumulated over several years from savings on other school construction budget and also reflect the savings from YRS.

The request was approved by the Board Of Commissions. Now it’s up to the school board to make up their mind. Don Hayden made the point that if the design work was started NOW we could avoid running out of capacity.

Fund schools first
State Superintendent June Atkinson was joined by NC School Boards Association President Wendell Hall, NC Association of School Administrators Executive Director Bill McNeal, North Carolina Association of Educators President Sheri Strickland, and NCPTA Executive Director Debra Horton at a news conference to call on North Carolina lawmakers to stand firm on funding public schools first. Atkinson reiterated that, “While we wait for full economic recovery, we cannot put children on hold. We need to fund schools first.” To read more, please visit the NCDPI Web site at www.ncpublicschools .org and click on the appropriate link under “News.”
